There seem to be a lot of negative reviews that have strangely different complaints but one thing in common: They wanted a “PUR” filter. I wonder if this may be a purely psychological issue; those who expected a PUR filter were disappointed in what they received and looked for something wrong with it. The truth is that this is still a PUR filter. In fact, if you check out the picture of the item right here on the Amazon product page, you will see that on the right side of the box near the bottom is the PUR logo. If you “need” a PUR filter, this is it.

I’ve had no problems with this filter at all after using it for about 4 weeks now. I will mention that I am careful to follow the instructions and flush enough water through the filter initially. If you haven’t flushed enough water then any taste issues may be due to that, so perhaps try flushing more water through. The water from my filter tastes exactly the same as it did with the previous version of this filter. I drink several glasses every day and it tastes exactly the same. No one else in my household even noticed that we used a different filter than before. We had several visitors for 4th of July weekend and since we live in the scorching hot desert, we went through at least a few gallons of water through their stay and we actually got comments about how nice and clean it tastes.

I will agree with those who complain that the price is getting outrageous. I am bothered that the price has gotten so high. Currently it is about $7 per month to use this filter, and I would definitely spend more than that buying bottled water. I’m not claiming that the price is great, just trying to be pragmatic about something that is as confusingly controversial as a water filter!

Overall I would recommend this as an “upgrade” of the previous version since it removes a significantly higher number of contaminants compared to the last version. Seeing as how there’s not an option to buy the previous version, the water still tastes great, and the price is still practical compared to the alternative, purchasing this is a good choice in my opinion.

Edit 6/4/18: Just installed my second one of these filters with similar results as they first. Fill rate is very consistent with the first filter and the old blue ones. No noticeable odor or taste issues. I will continue ordering these every 6 months until i have an issue.

Original review: I finally gave up trying to find the old blue filters and ordered one of these EveryDrop filters. I had concerns about the taste and fill rate issues that other people mentioned in their reviews. I’m happy to report that I have had no issues and the filter works just like the old blue one or better. Here is some additional info for others who might have the same concerns. My old filter was the fast fill type. On the label it was rated at 0.5 gallons per minute (GPM). The new filter does not say fast fill but is also rated at 0.5 GPM. To test how they compared, I filled a 2 liter bottle that I had available before I removed the old filter. The 2 times I filled it took 1:04 and 1.03 respectively. I installed the new filter and timed it from the very first button push. The water looked clear from the very beginning and had no smell that I could notice. The first fill took 1:24 and there was some sputtering as air was purged out of the system. But by the end of filling the 2 liter the first time I could tell the flow was better. The second fill had a little bit of sputtering and it took 1:11. After that, the times were all between 1:03 and 1:05 with no air. The old filters had air pockets much longer than this one did. The packaging recommends flushing 4 to 5 gallons through the filter before use so I filled the 2 liter 8 times which is just over 4 gallons. I then left it alone for about 30 minutes to make sure the filter was filled and saturated. I filled the bottle 2 more times to flush any remaining stuff out. My first glass of water was clear and tasted good. I can now recommend these filters to replace the old blue ones. I highly recommend doing the full flush process before using the water to drink or for ice.

A huge issue for something like this is whether it fits your fridge. We needed one for an older Kenmore side-by-side that we did not have maintenance records for. The Kenmore user manual said it used Part # 9030. Then it listed some others that you might look for: T1RFKB2, T1RFKB1, P1RFKB2, or P1RFKB1. Well, nobody sells any of those anymore. Yipes!

Luckily I managed to find a cross-reference someplace and ended up on this page. Plugged my fridge model number in the window above, and the Amazon tool said this would fit. So I ordered and crossed my fingers.

Yes, it fits. Installing was a non-event, super easy. Did the flushing as instructed and all that but I did not get any of the spurting or air problems that the user manual seemed to expect. Filled and discarded a few containers of water and then tried it.

In my opinion the taste is not as good as my Pur pitcher with the same water source, or the Pur faucet-mount filters I’ve used over the years. I suspect the pipes in the fridge are older and perhaps adding their own flavor. But it’s not bad, and after emptying a couple of bins of ice cubes and more flushing, I think it will be adequate and we will use it.

For the same price you could buy an entire Pur faucet mount with filter included, or more than one pitcher. And those are pretty rigorously tested by consumer publications, so you know what you’re getting. I think this item ought to be much cheaper given that it will only be used in a refrigerator door, even with icemaker etc. I still need a Pur pitcher for cooking and other stuff. So if it lasts a while I will feel better, but we’ll see…

So, I was down to my last filter and overdue for a filter change. Amazon offered a ‘home improvement purchase’ credit and I set out to find my replacement here as opposed to another online vendor I’d been using for the 14 years my side-by-side has been alive.
As I always start with the 1-star reviews while shopping, and after reading those and Amazon customers’ comments, I hesitated in buying this filter from Amazon. Perhaps the warnings were right (change in size; change in end prongs; change of color to purple being the bad ones; plastic taste, etc.). I thought: ‘Maybe the transition from Kenmore to Whirlpool to Pur to Every Drop over the span of 14 years has caused a compatibility issue with my older fridge and it will be risky to buy from somewhere different after all’. Then I remembered that Amazon’s returns aren’t too difficult, so I gave it a shot.
I recalled reading in the gripes: people had bought this filter, waited several months to attempt to change their filter, discovered there was a problem with the new one only after the period for returns; winding up out $45 bucks. Several suggested trying this new one immediately just in case you ran into any issues, you’d still be able to send it back. Sage advice to keep my spare — that I KNOW will work — as a spare!
New filter arrived yesterday. It was white like the one pictured. Water is odorless and clear. No weird taste. The size and prongs were identical to the filter being replaced. The only differences I noticed were: slightly faster flow and a loud clicking/banging sound upon installation which had NEVER happened with the previous 20 filter changes.
Hoping this helps someone else who, like me, has an older-model fridge and reads too many 1-star reviews.

I slammed this product because I thought the problem was the filter, when in fact it turned out to be the filter housing. After replacing that, these filters worked fine. Sorry!

    OLD REVIEW
There is a serious issue with this water filter and it has cost me a lot of money. These filters are not manufactured to the same specifications that they used to be. They are slightly shorter and therefore are not making enough contact with the water filter housing. This leads to water flow to the water dispenser and ice maker slowing to a stall. I’ve purchased three filters. Twice from amazon and one from the manufacturer’s website hoping they had the filter that was the correct dimension. None of that helped, and I spent hours researching online as to what the problem could be. This led me to purchase a multi meter to test the water inlet valve (a common source of water flow problems). I didn’t quite figure out how to use the multi meter correctly (lol) and misdiagnosed the problem as the water inlet valve and purchased a new one. The new one did not solve the problem. Then I noticed that water flow was not an issue whenever the filter was removed. I noticed if I pushed the filter back as far as it could go, water flow was normal. I therefore removed the filter housing and used zip ties to secure the connection between filter and housing tightly. At this point I assumed it had to be the filter housing and not the filter (since I purchased three of those) and purchased a new water filter housing. Well the filter housing came today and guess what? It’s not the filter housing. It’s these stupid filters that don’t fit anymore. I am going to light somebody up at whirlpool next week about these filters, which has caused much aggravation, time and money wasted. But to whom do I direct my frustration? Customer service hotline? I’m glad I didn’t call a repair man who would’ve charged me a ton and not fixed anything either. What a nightmare. DO NOT PURCHASE THIS UNTIL THERE IS SOME CONFIRMATION THAT THESE FILTERS FIT PROPERLY.

I read a bunch of reviews on this filter and filters in general. There seems to be a lot of confusion as to what they are supposed to do and why some cost so much more than other models. First of all… these are FILTERS… they do not reduce dissolved solid in the water, they reduce or eliminate chemical and biological contaminants. One person showed how she tested 3 glasses of water with a conductivity meter to show that this filter doesn’t do anything. They DO NOT nor are they SUPPOSED to reduce dissolved solids. If you want to drink water with zero dissolved solids, then drink distilled water… at least until you wind up in the hospital, because of it. The difference in cost is directly related to how much and what chemicals/biologics are removed from the water. Cheap ones are basically activated charcoal which gets rid of some things like chlorine and foul tasking water. More expensive ones will filter out or reduce dozens and dozens of chemicals and biologics. If you don’t know what your water contains you can contact your local water source (city, village etc.) and they can provide you a list of contaminants in your water. I typically buy those that will reduce as many contaminants as possible… 66 to 73. They cost about $10 more, but the peace of mind is worth the small additional cost.

It is easy to install but very expensive and honestly I do not think it improves the taste of the ice cubes. I change it because I believe it needs to be in there but if I could avoid buying, I would.

The first time I tried to change the filter on my fridge, I had a devil of a time and ended up using a thin blade screw driver to help remove the canister. Little did I know the installers had neglected to include the little black cap on the filter. Bummer! Having been better educated and getting a cap for the filter things are smooth sailing for replacing the little guy. Only wish it was at eye height instead of near the floor. One every six months is not too much to ask, so I go and just do it. Run about a gallon through the new filter until it quits sputtering and it’s ready to go. Tastes better than out of the kitchen faucet.

I had some leaking from my water filter under the fridge. I thought it was the water filter housing and I replaced it. But after putting in another filter it still leaked. I went through two different brand filters and they kept leaking. I bought this Everydrop filter and this filter solved my problem. No leaking now. By the way my fridge is a Kenmore. One of the filters I bought was a Kenmore brand filter but it leaked. Even though I have a Kenmore, I think it’s actually made by Whirlpool. I read that the Everydrop filters were for the Whirlpool refrigerators. It worked for me and stopped my leaks. I would highly recommend it.

Very tastes great, 5 stars. The rest is how ran 4 gallons of water (part of the instructions after installation) without standing there for 10 minutes with a pitcher.

    Setup
I taped a funnel to direct the water into a large cooler below, and then stuck a washcloth between the funnel and the push lever to get it to dispense on its own.

    Timing
Unfortunately my cooler doesn’t have marks indicating the volume on the inside. I have a giant measuring cup/pitcher that holds 4 cups, so I manually filled the picture and timed it (I know super nerdy) and then did some math on how long it would take to get to 4 gallons. Then I just set a timer and multitasked. For my fridge, it was 8 minutes.

We previously ordered these water filters directly from Whirlpool until last year when they charged our credit card for them but never sent the merchandise. Then when I called them, they had the gall to say that they had not charged us for the filters as I’m looking directly at the charge on my credit card statement. The woman was incredibly rude as well and refused to refund our money. We had to contact our CC company to get the charge removed. We will never do business with Whirlpool again but will continue to order the filters through Amazon. Their price is competitive, and we get them within 3 days of ordering. Good job, Amazon!

We use these in our JennAir refrigerator/freezer model #JS42PPDUDE. It works as advertised and is easy to install. On our model, it goes in on the bottom right side (outside the door). Just push the button to dislodge the existing filter and click in the new one. It usually works for about 6 months for us. Our fridge has an alert to tell us when to put in a new one.

I’d definitely purchase this again though I find the fridge filter value to be pretty terrible.

This is a high-quality filter that effectively removes contaminants from my refrigerator’s water and ice. However, the price of the filter is quite high compared to other options on the market. Overall, if budget is not a concern, this filter is a great choice for maintaining the purity of your refrigerator’s water and ice.

I used to have a subscription to a service that would send a private label replacement filter every X number of months. Suddenly, the filters they were sending switched to a new model that had an awful chemical plastic smell (not the filter itself, but the outside plastic housing). It was horrible. Switched to these and they work great. Worth it to pay a little extra to have a good quality item that doesn’t reek of chemicals.

Update: I take it all back! If you experience slow flow (or hammering) with these filters then you probably need to replace the filter holder part in your fridge. Like this https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B005AR70YW Now every filter works great!

So the quality has dropped to a point that 2/3rd of the filters are reducing waterflow to a useless trickle.

I bought another brand that looked the same before. It had a NSF 42 rating. So that helps with chlorine flavor. 🙁
If you want a water filter that actually does something, get one like this Whirlpool OEM style that has the NSF 42, 53, and 401 so you will get junk out of your drinking water. You will taste the difference immediately. Make sure it’s new in the box. Great filter!

I’ve bought many other brands in multi-packs to save money and they all don’t really work at all; it still tastes like tap water, or worse.

THIS ONE is the best! It costs a bit more – I’ll give you that – but the taste of the water is clean and pure, finally – just like the old Whirlpool filters I used to buy from Sears.
